Hedgesville, West Virginia -USofA!
I have a domestic white duck(Sunrise), and a domestic mallard duck (Spax). They were brought home on March 17th, 2005 when they were 3 days old, from the local Farm & Tracker Depot. They are now 7 months old. Fat, plump, and doing very well. My son came home from high school, and was so excited, his friend had a duckling from the same store, in her pocket. We just went to LOOK, but before you knew it, it brought 2 ducklings home. they told us that 2 ducklings are better than 1, so they don't get lonely when we are at work. I'd never thought that I would love these ducks as much as I do. I see that is what everyone else on here thinks the same!!

We have been really lucky so far, with are babies, except Sunrise, was attacked by a neighbors dog on Oct 4th, 2005. We have a acre fenced in with penning, and the dog got thru the gate. Sunrise is very lucky, because the dog bit her badly, but at the base of her neck, down between neck and her left wing. We rushed her! to our Animal Hospital that is an hour away, down in Leesburg, VA. The doc stitched her up, medicated her. And told us that Sunrise probably would not make it thru the night because of SHOCK. They wanted us to leave her, and I decided if she was not going to make it, that I wanted her home with us, and her friend and side kick, SpAx!

We brought her home, and I lifted her little head to drink plenty of fluids every 2 hours during the night. And continued this for the next day and night. She made it!!! And I Thank God every day! Now, we don't have the money to install a HIGH wooden fence, but we have taken measures to protect our ducks! On the days that I am home, they roam around in thier pen, but on my work days, I leave them in thier Duck HOUSE which is a 10x12 structure, made out of some oak barn wood that was given to us, with an insulated tin roof. Its great for them! DRY,WARM, and nothing can get into them., I come home at lunch and let them roam for an hour, and then let them out when I am home. It's amazing how har! d it is to PROTECT them, that is the only concern that I have with them. I kept their "Quack House" very very clean, so disease and other issues don't scare me. I do worry about them feeding so much in the yard, I am scared that they might eat something that they shouldn't. Also, with winter coming, I am unsure how COLD it can get before I have to run thier heat lamp up to them. other than that, NO worries, they are a great joy, and I have no problems with them pinching, because when they were little, I would gently hold their little beaks closed, and tell them NO.

Sunrise loves to be held like a baby burping on your shoulder. But Spax, is more of a loaner. I am pretty sure that I have 2 hen ducks. because for the past 2 months, they have been laying eggs. ( 1 egg per duck, per night ) They have not nested, so after 28 days, I removed all the eggs, and held them up to the light, and there were no fetus's in the eggs. So, that told me, I have 2 hens. I would love to find a MALE Duck, to mate with them, but don't know of anyone in my area. Thanks for letting me share my story. May God bless you, and your ducklings/ Ducks, and keep them safe!!

Hi Lori & Greg! I've signed & emailed before, but I thought I'd sign one last time before the guestbook closes down..

My two male rouens, Rocko & Stimpy, are now 3 months old, & their heads are just turning green. It's wonderful to go outside every day and see the changes that occur just overnight. It's amazing how fast they grow. I remember the day I got them like it was yesterday. And you guys have helped me so much.. I never would have raised the two healthy pets I have today without you two. So anyone who might be reading this that needs ducky info, LOOK NO FURTHER. Keep up the good work, guys!

I was so delighted to read al the entries in your duck stories column. i own 2 ducks myself, a pekin called matia, and a khaki campbell called mamoutsa, (they are Greek names for sweet eyes, and little monkey). I purchased matia - the pekin first and felt i was denying him his manliness so purchased a female for him. Matia was predominantly raised within the house - at least for the first 5-6 months, and has learnt to behave like a naughty toddler, he understands when we ask him if he is hungry, we tell him to go and clean himself and he heads off to bathe, we ask him where his mate is and he wonders off to find her. when we open the door and ask him to come inside he gladly does so. and heads towards the tv to sit down and watch with us. As soon as it gets dark we call him to say its time for bed, and you guessed it he heads off towards his pen. They are my 2 best friends. Great website by the way

Hello Lori and Greg! It's me Alexis!, well I saw the baby ducks on the duck cam and I was so in disbelief on how big they have gotten. I can't belief how much bigger Noodles is than Ducky and Ducky is a year older than Noodles. I love my babies so much I don't know what I would do without them. I need them just as much as they need me. Alot of people think I am weird because I have ducks as pets sometimes I even get rude people who think I am stupid and I tell them that I am not werid or stupid I think I am unique, because it takes a person with a loving heart to open up their hearts to a duck after all its not every day that you see a duck as a pet. My duckies go every where that I can possibly take them, like tomorrow is my birthday and of course my Duckies are going to be here to celebrate this special day with me! I never knew how many people love ducks. To every in New Orleans, my heart goes out to you! and I my thoughts and prayers are with all of you and for all the people who lost their lives or a loved on and to all the duckies too! To all the duck lovers out there keep on loving them because we are all they have! Lori and Greg I love your website so much keep up the good work!

This is the best website I have found yet on the subject of ducks. Anything and everything I ever wanted to know is here! I just learned you can diaper a duck! That's incredible! I don't think my duck would go for that though. Thanks for such a great website. The pictures are precious too. I will be posting my LuLu's pics soon. :)
[ Wow, thank you! :>   Anyone curious about diapering, see my Q & A section: #10 which includes a link to Nancy Townsend's website for her patent pending diaper harness. Yes, you can walk your duck too! ]

This is by far the best website dedicated to the world's most beautiful creatures: ducks! Not only did this site reassure me that I wasn't crazy for owning a pet "house" duck, but it led me in the right direction--the diaper can be just as efficient on a duck as it is on a baby human. Now I can take my duck (a white female muscovy) almost anywhere, and sometimes, I find her at the foot of my bed in the morning, and she wags her tail. What can I say? I love my duck!

Oh, and I also have a flock of 6 ducks that have a whole acre of pond to themsleves. Thanks to the care advice on this website, I know how to care for them during the winter.

Thanks, Live Ducks!

Hello Lori!, it's me Alexis! well here is a little update on my two precious ducks. Ducky is a female buff duck who has a very unsual personality. Then I have a male runner duck. When we first got him we thought he was a girl so we named it Daphne, but we found out that Daphne is a boy so we changed his name to Noodles. Noodles is only 3months old and he is already taller and bigger than Ducky. I am happy to say that they are getting along very well and enjoy each others company. Noodles is nothing like Ducky. Ducky likes to be carried and loves to give and receive kisses and on the other hand Noodles wouldn't allow us to do any of that I think it's because I was around alot more when Ducky was growing up and now I only see my babies in the morning and night and weekends. I try to spend lots of time with them. I try to get that special bond with Noodles but it's like he is afraid or something. Ducky and Noodles look so cute together I would like to post their pictures on your website but I dont know how to. I want everyone to see how beautiful my babies are. I dont have any kids so for now these are my kids and I love them so much!!!!

Suggestion..since you can't put the duck cam on the new duckling pen, how about a few more photos posted each week so all of us can enjoy seeing them grow? I enjoy ducks, but know I will never have the time or resources to have live ones..so I just have my stuffed ducks, and enjoy reading the stories and viewing the photos..thanks again!
[ Check out the News page often, since I can't say how often the pictures will be updated, but it has been a couple times a week. The ones you missed or don't see anymore aren't lost forever, they will be permanently added to the photo album as time permits. Keep the faith that someday you can be involved with ducks in some capacity, perhaps as a volunteer for a rehabber? ]

Hi People,

I too love ducks (of course, who wouldn't!), and have been visiting this website for over a year now. My girlfriend got me into ducks, as she is the absolute duck lover. i gather this page is the way to let everyone know whatever I have to share re:ducks!.

Someone once said on this site, that a duck's quack doesn't echo. I was watching a program the other night called "Mythbusters", (on channel 2 in South Australia), which involved two men and a team investigating this phenomenon. I believe they are American or Canadian (pls forgive me! I'm an Aussie who finds it hard to distinguish accents at times). Great watching - you'll have to watch it to find out the answer! I recomment it to duck fans.

Alexis from El Monte, Ca. I read your letter about the duck you tried to save. It made my eyes water too. I have 2 mallards, a male and a female. I could not imagine watching one of them die. I love them so much.

My female is 5 and the male is now almost 5 months. They are so loveable, and they just love the attention. I hope I get the chance to see them have little ones. I know I won't be able to get rid of them.

Ducks are very smart and respond well to your voice. They know when it is time to eat and when I come outside to play with them. They meet me at the fence and run up to me when I stoop down. My kids say I love them to much. It never fails everywhere I go I see ducks and it's a joke with my family that no matter what is going on I always see the ducks first. Can't help I love my little feathered friends.

All you duck lovers out there keep writing about your babies and take care of them they need us too.

i cant help noticing that the ducklings are in the sun. i think you should cover the whole cage with something, as i watch them moving about for some shade. It must be hot there and if they cant use the pond at least they should have shade
[ Thank you for your concern, the ducklings have a choice of sun or shade, it's hard to tell on the Duck Cam, but I assure you they're fine. While some Southern CA cities have seen triple digits, we've been averaging a breezy, warm 75 degrees and they are enjoying their own wading pool when proper supervision can be provided. ]

We just want to say thanks for all you do for ducks and duck lovers everywhere. Sadly, we didn't discover your site until after the passing of Trouble and Mischief, but we were happy to hear you have opened your home to FOUR new little ducklings! We have been watching the Duck Cam ever since you brought them home (they share Jen's birthday!)

In fact, we were worried all last weekend because we saw the whole sad event when duck #4 hurt himself. We knew something was wrong with the little guy, he was just lying there and the others were pretty restless. We kept checking in on him all evening until the camera went dark. When he wasn't there the next day, and there was no news on the site, we feared the worst! I can't tell you how overjoyed we are to know he will be ok, although it was sad to think of him without his family, even for the short while. We look forward to watching these sassy little ducks grow up!

Thanks again, and keep up the good work.

I have a pekin duck that was originally a school project for my daughter's biology class. Needless to say, we fell in love with Archie, and decided to keep him. He has developed a problem with one of his legs, its turned out. A visit to the vet told us that he had gout, but I'm not sure if thats a correct diagnosis.
[ There are treatments available for gout available through your veterinarian and limited information is available by doing a web search. ]

I have 2 mallards. One male and 1 female. I have the female 5 years. She is so loveable. I can hold her, kiss, and talk to her like a child. She follows me around the yard and lays down when she wants to be petted. Charley is the best pet you could have. The male is about 4 months old and is no where near as friendly as she is. They have their own pool, house, and area in our yard. I am hoping he will be a nice as she is one day. I love my ducks, they are my feathered kids. Mallards are beautiful and I love owning them. I would never own a dog ducks are better.

This Sunday we got our new Runner baby duck. We name her Daphne and she is only a week and half old. Ducky our other frmale duck is kind of jealous, we pay attention to both of them so they get the equal attention, but sometimes I find Ducky being mean to Daphne. I'm sure Ducky will learn to get along with Daphne. Lori thank you so much for your e-mail. I do agree with you there are alot of dumb people out there who have no respect for nature. It really pisses me off when I see kids kicking the ducks at the park and throwing rocks at them and their parents see what they are doing and do nothing about it. So thats when I step in I'll tell the kid in a nice way to stop and if they still don't listen they I let their parents know. I also see lots of people feeding them patato chips and bread I let them know that if they are goning to feed the ducks that they should feed they crumble or cracked corn since the vet said it was good for them. What makes me mad the most is that I see alot of people throwing trash into the pond. Last week this idiot came up to me and asked me where I got Ducky from I didn't think much of it so I told him where because I thought he was interested in getting one as a pet I told him that taking care of a duck was alot of responsibility and he told me that he didn't want one for a pet, he wanted one to eat/cook. I got so mad that I told him off. One of the worst asked questions about Ducky is if I am going to cook her for Thanksgiving. It's like yeah, why would I put a collar on Ducky and dress her up in clothes if I am going to eat her.

ON SATURDAY I WENT TO THE PARK WHERE WE TAKE DUCKY EVERY WEEKEND. A DUCK IN THE POND CAUGHT MY ATTENTION IT WAS JUST SITTING IN THE POND NOT MOVING. I WAS CURIOUS AND I WALKED OVER TO THE DUCK. I KNEW THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH IT BECAUSE SHE LET ME GET REALLY CLOSE TO HER. MY HUSBAND WALKED OVER TO HER AND PICKED HER UP AND SHE DIDN'T EVEN FIGHT IT. WE THEN REALIZED THAT SHE WAS TAINGLED IN SOME FISHING LINE. IT WAS TAINGLED AROUND HER FEET AND HER NECK AND THEN THE WORST HAPPENED THE FISHING LINE WAS LEADING INTO HER MOUTH. SOME IDIOT LEFT A BROKEN FISHING LINE WITH A HOOK AT THE END AND SHE HAD SWALLOWED IT. READING SOME INFORMATION ON YOUR WEBSITE I REMEBERED THAT METAL OBJECTS CAN BE DEADLY FOR A DUCK. BUT IT WAS WORSE BECAUSE THIS WAS A HOOK.WE KNEW THAT WE HAD ONLY A MATTER OF TIME TO SAVE THIS DUCK. SO WE TOOK HER TO THE PET SHOP WHERE WE GOT DUCKY FROM AND THE OWNER SPECIALIZES IN DUCKS SO HE WAS ABLE TO GET THE FISHING LINE OUT BUT NOT THE HOOK AND WE WERE TOLD THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WE COULD DO FOR HER SHE WAS GOING TO DIE. WE DIDN'T WANT TO LET HER DIE ALL BY HER SELF SO WE TOOK HER HOME AND DID THE BEST WE COULD DO FOR HER.WHEN WE FIRST BROUGHT HER IN SHE WAS WEAK AND COULDN'T EVEN WALK BUT A COUPLE OF HOURS LATER SHE WAS UP AND WALKING FOR A MOMENT WE THOUGHT SHE MIGHT MAKE IT, BUT THEN THREE HOURS LATER SHE DIDN'T LOOK SO GOOD SHE COULDN'T EVEN PICK UP HER HEAD ME AND MY HUSBAND LAID THERE WITH HER. I REMEBER SEEING BLOOD COME OUT OF HER NOSE AND MOUTH AND I STARTED TO CRY. I WATCHED AS HER EYES KEPT ROLLING BACK MY HUSBAND SAT DOWN WITH ME AND STARTED CRYING TOO. HE PICKED HER UP AND HUGGED HER MINUTES LATER SHE DIE IN HIS ARMS. I WAS REALLY EMOTIONAL BUT I THINK MY HUSBAND WAS MORE EVEN AFTER SHE WAS ALREADY DEAD HE STILL HELD HER IN HIS ARMS WITH TEARS COMING DOWN HIS CHEEKS. MY EYES STILL GET WATERY JUST TALKING ABOUT IT. I FEEL SO BAD THAT I COULDN'T HELP HER BUT I REALIZED THAT I DID, WE KEPT HER ALIVE A LITTLE LONGER AND SHE DIDN'T HAVE TO DIE ALL ALONE.

Hi Lori & Greg - How egg-cited you must be!!! The newbies are soooooooo cute!! I am really glad that you decided to keep all 4 after the confusion when you went to pick them up. This is one place I know where a duck will have a greyt home and no worries!! I have been floating the 'DuckCam' at work all day and I was beginning to think that those were little hams in there instead of ducks. One little guy in particular seems to have figured out where the camera is & it's almost as if he is keeping a close eye on it. He must be able to see his own reflection somehow and is taken with the beauty that is being reflected back to him!!!

I love your web site. It has taught me alot of new things about Ducks that I didn't even know. Ducks are really good friends, it's like the understand you and fell your happiness and saddness. I'm very sorry about Trouble, he was really fun to watch on the Duck cam I even got in trouble at work a couple of times, but it was worth it. I can't wait untill you guys get the new Ducks. Ducky loves to go for rides in the car she likes to look out as were going by other cars and buildings. Ducky is so special and is extremly friendly, but she is also very nosey. When she hears her name she will come and see who is talking about her. Ducky actually comes when you call her name. She likes taking bubbles bathes with me. Everyday when I come home from work, she knows when I'm home before I even walk in the door(she recognizes my car alarm) Ducky is a really smart duck! She likes to play hide-and-seek with my husband and she loves giving us kisses.

I came across your site and have to say Bravo Zulu. I read your article about ducklings at Tractor Supply and (being an employee) must say something. Not all of us know what we're doing with animals, but most of us do. It is a request of customers to carry ducks around Easter time. When the hatchery has them labled and sent to us as a specific breed, that is the breed we tell the customer. The care we give them and instruct the customers of is the care instructed by the hatchery (and, in my store's case, area vets). I wholeheartedly applaud what this website is achieving. I only wish to express what I know of my particular TSC store. Thank you!

I now have two ducks"Duece and Munchie"I can't tell you how much we enjoy them. They are our babies, and spoiled rotten.I give my ducks hugs and kisses every morning and everynight before I put them away.Duece loves kisses, He runs to me when I call him,Munchie on the other hand wouldn't complain if I stopped with the hugs and kisses. But none the less she lets me give them.I just wanted to thank you for this site and bringing ducks into our lifes,If treated right they can be your best friend and a great pet.My 3 teenagers are always saying I treat the ducks better then them. haha.Hey, they don't talk back, well not much and never ask to borrow the car. Again thanks and I will be sending another donation soon.

Hello! it's me Alexis agian. Well Ducky is now 1 year & 2months old. Ducky was only 2 days old when my husband gave her to me as a Easter gift. Ducky was so cute, yellow and soft I fell in love with her the moment I saw her after all I always wanted a Duck. Ducky was a actually more than what I had expected because to everyone she is just a duck, but to me and my husband she is like our daughter since we don't have any kids yet. Ducky is'nt an ordinary duck, she believes that she is human! Ducky eats at the table with us, she goes everywhere with us, Ducky likes to wear cute clothes and hats. Whenever Ducky does something bad and she knows that she is going to get trouble,it's so cute how she will lay flat on the floor and start crying (literaly) tears actually come out of her eyes. Ducky is a very jealous duck, especailly when my husband pays attention to other animals. Both my husband and I love Ducky very much, she is like our little angle that was sent from the rainbow above!

Hi everyone.. 4 years ago today I went down to the lake and found 2 ducks i begged to my parents if we could keep them but they said no, we can keep them down by our lake. So the next day i go to check on them and i find out that something got the other one, so my parents said that we could keep the other duck, so i named him Lucky because he was the one who survived. Now over the years i could have raised over 9 ducks but things have been getting them over the years. So finally after so many tries i finally have a girl duck which is now laying eggs (9 so far)and she not even a year old, but i am sooooooo glad shes laying because now she can lay eggs every year instead of me raiseing them and this time will be soooo exciting and ever new for me watching Bubbles raise her own duks with the father. Now i have 4 ducks an there names are Lucky(boy), Squigges(boy), Bubbles(girl) and Pudddles(boy). The ones that i lost were Ripples, Daffy, Duckie, Moose and Puff, they are all pekin ducks except for Moose which was a Mallard.

Just wanted to let you know that your web-site has helped me tremendously. Anything that I couldn't find here, you suggested other web-sites that I found useful information from as well. When I discovered your site last June, I had found an abandoned baby mallard and had no idea how to care for him.

He has a wing problem (Angel-wing, I believe). I tried to contact a local rehabber here but was informed that if he could not be treated and returned to the wild they would destroy him. I decided to keep him and he is the love of my life!!

One of the best pets I have ever had. We decided to get him a companion in January and adopted a domestic duck from a water-fowl rescue place in Utah. She is really sweet and I love her too!!

Ducks are wonderful. They are a lot of work but I don't mind because I enjoy them so much. Just another way to keep me from sitting in front of the T.V. and getting lazy!! Keep up the good work!!!

I am just starting to read the information offered in Live Duck and its links. I'm finding it very informative and helpful! A pair of mallards has been visiting my back yard and I was looking for what to feed them, and found out that I should not feed them at all.
[ I know how you feel, it's so hard not to give to wild animals. The information is only now becoming public knowledge that it's the worst thing we can do for their survival. Sad and hard to abide by, but critical. ]

I enjoy your website. It's good education and easy to manuever. I love the ducks. They are so cute.

My fiance got some ducks one Easter before I met him. They are grown now. I've convinced him we need to find them a better home with a true lake and people to care for them. We've got some callers now and they'll be heading off to a better home before long. But, I've enjoyed them so much and look forward to having more ducks in the future when we have a more apporpriate location.

I'll be passing your website on to the new owners of the ducks.

Hello, your website is wonderful but may I suggest more info on protecting pet ducks from predators. I have read so many heartbreaking stories. My duck stays inside every night. An indoor cage at night is far better than a predator. When my girl was only days old, I read Storey's Guide to Raising Ducks- a very helpful book that addresses almost every question, including problems with predators (just ignore the one chapter on recipes). You can usually get a copy through the library. This book and your website are the ultimate source for duck care. Perhaps this may help some visitors to your site to avoid loss of their pet.
[ On my Care:Food:Health page the topic is addressed beginning with the first paragraph under "Shelter". As always, with any pet that may be exposed to wild animals or neighborhood animals, common sense is foremost in ensuring your pet's health and safety. ]

I love ducks and your site. I had a duckling named Philly, which is still alive and thriving on a one acre pond with her friends. She is very brave, surviving a ferel cat attack. Her guts were ripped out and we thought she was a goner. With G-D's help, she got better (don't know how) She's my little angel.

This site is wonderful and has helped me a lot. We got "Easter" ducks to add to our neighborhood pond when they grow up. Now that we have them, I'm learning so much and bonding with them more than I thought. We have 3 pekins and 1 rouen. (quessing by their appearance.) Now I'm researching habitats for when they move outside. Thanks for all the help!!!! The ducks are more amazing than I thought they'd be.

It's so empty seeing no little ducks swimming around the pond. And that is just me looking at it through my computer screen. I am so sorry that your little friends are gone and I know how much you miss both Trouble and Mischief. Think about what a wonderful life you provided for them though; they were luckier than most ducks. I am so sorry that you have to go through this. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I told my husband, a physcian who deals with tragedy daily, that Trouble was gone. We were eating out and I immediatey regretted my decision. I could see him fighting emotion. Now what can explain our tearful reaction ? It's the loss of watching Trouble - pure and innocent, sweet and spontaneous - paddling around on a pond made of love. If you don't get another little Trouble - consider our donation as a "thanks" for the happy memories. Warmest wishes, Cathy

LiveDucks is the best! Everything I know about raising ducks, I learned from the site. I'm able to educate people about ducks and even fought city hall. Next stop: Pet stores! I'm going to work my hardest to ban the sales of Easter ducklings and chicks. Before I found LiveDucks, I didn't think twice about Easter ducklings, but now my eyes are open and I'm ready to help make a change. Thank you for your breaking news and tips on how to help ducks. I really enjoyed your website. It is wonderful to be able to see other people treat ducks as pets rather than for eating. It's nice to have a support group of people who understands the grief of passing of duck friends and celebrate the silly things they do. I am also a member of Backyardchicken.com's forum where many people with duck pets are members. I would suggest posting a "want" post to find Trouble a Pekin girlfriend.
